Neater Nupps At Last

lace scarf JEB Zephyr
So I decided to finish up another UFO languishing too long, Dorothy Siemen's Hugs and Kisses scarf. This is for DD#2, who is in love with the Zephyr I used for Evenstar (I'm using it doubled). I haven't made anything for her in a bit, so I really ought to finish something for her. I'm truly half-way done, just haven't taken a recent shot of it.

I haven't looked at Swallowtail in a bit.

Part of the reason was Evenstar, but I have to admit, a bigger part of the reason was getting bogged down in nupps. Nupps (rhymes with either soups or sups, depending upon whom you ask), are lace-speak for bobbles. Bobbles are easy to do in worsted or Aran-weight yarn, tricky as the dickens in fingering or lace weight, even with sharp needles. A very clever person figured out a much easier way to work them using a crochet hook:

Just the excuse I needed to buy a set of these, right?

Both are pretty. I never found nupps difficult, but I am not a tight knitter. I can just imagine how awful they must be if the stitches have no give.

I have been eyeing an Estonian lace scarf which of course is full of nupps. I made lily of the valley socks which had nupps and didn't find them that difficult. I have enough yarn left from my evenstar to make the estonian lace so I'm going to put that on the list. The endless list.

Good to know about LoV socks; I have that pattern and hadn't the courage to make them.

Now need to find great ivory-colored sock yarn, hmmmm.

Thanks so much for the video on the nupps. I've done quite a few projects with nupps, but never have really enjoyed them. I'm seriously considering casting on a new project just so I can try this method!

This is wonderful. I’ve had trouble with nupps in the past, especially with keeping them so that they have a consistent look. Also, I had some problems with nupps if yarn overs were before or after the nupp. It looks like finishing the nupp immediately would solve that problem.
I found this method http://doublepointed.wordpress.com/2009/08/24/nupp_hack/
and I thought it would work for me - and it might -but the video’s approach appears to be better.

Thank you so much!

@ Denise and Dorothy,
You're welcome, glad you found it helpful.
I agree that finishing the nupps on the same row you make them is easier than doing them on the next row when you have YO's flanking them. I can't tell you how many YO's I picked up in the nupps-- too many for sure!
